On Beauty by Zadie Smith
On Beauty was my introduction to Zadie Smith and I’m happy I finally took the plunge into one her books last week. The novel grabbed my attention immediately for several reasons: most of it takes place around a university, the characters are flawed but sympathetic, and there is a general undercurrent of humility in Smith’s writing.
The story is of a mixed-race family that stems from Florida and England. Together they share the struggle of maintaining some sort of relational balance in a small Massachusetts town with a rival family constantly getting in their way. Family dynamic stories are difficult to write and I typically don’t enjoy reading them, but On Beauty was a pleasure due to the bits of humor that are thrown into the mix. The plot also moves a steady pace and remains consistent even as the characters change or develop.
Overall, I feel pretty good about this book starting my year. Zadie Smith sort of took me by surprise and I’d love to read more. So who’s going to bring me a copy of White Teeth to the book swap tonight?
